Favourites from 2016

January 2nd 2016 and Kane Hemmings celebrates after Dundee win the first Dundee derby of the year, United’s Sean Dillon’s reaction sums up exactly what it means to lose to your local rivals.

Fun in the snow as Gary Harkins celebrates scoring a cracking goal against one of his former clubs at Firhill.

Scotland v Denmark at Hampden Park and one of the mascots spots her mum in the crowd.

During 2014 and 2015 I photographed three Scottish Sunday amateur cup semi finals where Dundee teams lost (Fintry once and Fairfield twice) – this year Dundee Argyle reached the semi final and the Scottish Amateur FA ridiculously scheduled the match for the same day as the Dundee derby so I couldn’t travel to photograph it.

Thankfully Argyle won so I got to cover the final – With seconds to go, and the Dundee side beating Bullfrog AFC by Scott Gardiner’s goal, I aimed my lens at the bench and caught Argyle management team Alan Henry and Neil Jardine’s joy as their side won a national trophy.

Probably the most popular picture with Dundee fans I’ve ever taken – Craig Wighton looks straight at Dundee United fans as he celebrates scoring the goal which rubbed salt in their wounds as the Dark Blues relegated their city rivals.

Had to throw in a remote shot and love the colours in this one as Mark O’Hara scores for Dundee against Rangers at Dens Park.

Dundee’s Darren O’Dea and Motherwell’s Scott McDonald had been in the papers talking of their friendship in the days leading up to their teams clashing – so this pic of the two of them competing for the ball amused me.

The first Development League derby of the season saw Dundee win 3-0 at Tannadice and this picture of Dundee’s Kerr Waddell and United’s Jordan Garden summed up the match better than any goal celebration – The Dee were head and shoulders above their local rivals.

Annfield (white) and Tayport (blue) of the Dundee Sunday FA captured at 560mm – 400mm f2.8 lens with a 1.4x convertor

Dundee’s Cammy Kerr scores his first competitive goal for the club and gives me the best celebration of the year…

…Except for this one – Krystian Kunc of FC Polonia celebrates after scoring against Tayport in the Dundee Sunday FA at Fairmuir, Dundee – there were probably no more than 15 people watching as he fired home an equaliser and raced right down my lens – his team lost but his celebration made the paper.

Half time entertainment at Ibrox as Dundee played Rangers – and Zorb football – love the leg in the air.

And another bit of half time entertainment with a shoot out between Dundee and Inverness fans – this lad thought he was going to score until Dundee youth goalie Calum Ferrie raced out and flattened him in the process of saving – then helped him to his feet.

A simple pic that I was delighted to see make the back page of the paper after Dundee players visited Ninewells hospital to deliver presents to kids before Christmas.

That moment when you’ve just missed a chance to grab a point after being two down to the champions at their ground – Faissal El Bakhtaou’s despair

And the final one for 2016 – Dundee had been two nil down against Hearts at home but improbably battled back to all square – then in injury time they scored a winner and Darren O’Dea loved it.
